Legends of Jasper Columbia Icefield

Elders speak of "The Great White Blanket," a term used by some to describe the glacier's vast expanse, believed to be a gift of renewal and water to all life downstream. The Columbia Icefield also marks a place of traditional travel and trade routes through treacherous terrain, respected for its dangers and admired for its beauty. While Western exploration of the Icefield began in the late 19th century, these Indigenous connections go back millennia, embodying a relationship of deep respect between the people and this frozen giant of the Rockies.
