Journey Through Ice and Time

Journey Through Ice and Time transforms the glacier experience into something far more meaningful. After learning about the immense age, power, and constant movement of the ice, visitors step back outside and look toward the towering glacier with a completely different perspective. It becomes more than scenery - it becomes a living part of Earth’s ancient history unfolding right in front of them in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Journey Through Ice and Time

Journey Through Ice and Time

Journey Through Ice and Time at the Columbia Icefield Centre in 2026 is one of the most immersive interpretive experiences within the entire Columbia Icefield adventure, taking visitors far beyond sightseeing and into the incredible story of how this ancient frozen world was created over thousands of years.

As guests move through the exhibit, they are taken on a fascinating journey back to the last Ice Age, discovering how enormous glaciers once covered much of the Rocky Mountains and gradually shaped the dramatic valleys, towering peaks, and rugged landscapes seen throughout Jasper National Park today. The experience reveals how powerful moving ice slowly carved through solid rock, creating the vast mountain wilderness visitors now travel through along the Icefields Parkway.

Large visual displays and immersive storytelling guide visitors through the incredible life cycle of a glacier. Guests learn how tiny snowflakes gradually compress over centuries into dense glacial ice, building layer upon layer until massive rivers of ice begin slowly flowing down the mountains. The exhibit helps visitors understand that glaciers are constantly moving, shifting, cracking, and reshaping the landscape even though their movement is almost invisible to the human eye.

One of the most fascinating parts of Journey Through Ice and Time is seeing how the Athabasca Glacier has dramatically changed over recent decades. Historical photographs and timeline displays reveal just how far the glacier has retreated, offering a powerful visual comparison between the glacier’s immense past size and its modern position today. Standing inside while realizing how rapidly this ancient ice has been changing creates a much deeper appreciation for the landscape visible just outside the centre.

The experience also explores the incredible geography of the larger Columbia Icefield, one of North America’s most important freshwater reservoirs. Visitors discover how meltwater from this massive icefield flows toward three different oceans - the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic - making the surrounding mountains one of the continent’s most remarkable hydrological crossroads.
